The art of wellbeing aboard

2007年11月01日

Prestigious, elegant mega-yachts: perfect symbols of "Made in Italy" design. But also vessels that mirror the refined, complex wishes of their owners, a clientele with an increasing awareness and interest in taking care of themselves, both at home and on vacation.

This is why ships constructed by CRN are not only the product of top-flight technical skills, but are also capable of changing and modelling themselves to cater to the client’s need for comfort, which, in this day and age, translates into a yearning for total wellness, involving both mind and body, in what constitutes an onboard lifestyle.

The result is a new approach to travelling on the sea, with the cruise seen by the owner as a possibility not only to discover exotic paradises, but also to take good care of oneself.

A chance to savour the sea and wellbeing during one’s free time. Relaxation and comfort, but also a firm intention to experience the vessel in harmony with one’s own body and the surrounding environment.

Today all the CRN mega-yachts under construction, as well as the most recently launched ships, meaning the 54-metre "Ability" and the 60 mt "GiVi", are equipped with roomy areas set aside exclusively for wellness, in its twin forms of relaxation and movement.

Custom-designed programs and equipment on the cutting edge of technology are used to create increasingly large, separate areas set up with structures for relaxation and fitness apparatuses as well.

The most commonly found arrangements include work-out areas, plus full-fledged spa facilities equipped with Turkish-Roman baths, aromatic showers, saunas and whirlpool baths outfitted for chromotherapy.

Flexibility and a constant readiness for new challenges made it possible for the shipyard in the Marches, a number of years ago, to revolutionise the rules of classic nautical design, in order to answer the ship-owner’s every wish.

Normally used to house technical facilities, the stern portions of the latest CRN constructions, the "Ability" and the "GiVi", are transformed into a VIP area devoted to wellness, a feature also found on the 43-metre Composite project, as well as many of the steel and aluminium mega-yachts under construction.

The stern hatch, lowered for use as a beach platform hanging just above the water, leads the guest to an innovative area designed as a large Spa facility. Equipped with a sauna, Turkish bath and work-out zone, this wellness area was conceived of by CRN Engineering, which received expert consulting from the technical personnel of Technogym, Starpool and Klafs.

Together with all the latest exercise equipment (treadmill, biking machine, recliner etc), Technogym’s Kinesis system is one of the most frequently requested features, representing an important plus in the outfitting of any exercise zone. This platform for free-body use makes possible an endless variety of different exercises and movements in the same space, offering the occasion for the creation of customised work-out programs.

The CRN technical office, manned by a staff of approximately 40 that includes planners, architects, engineers and designers, was able to satisfy the desires of the owner within the bounds of an established set of standards, combining safety, a taste for things beautiful and technological refinement. Proof of the shipyard’s painstaking care is the certification obtained from the Lloyd’s Register, the most prestigious yacht classification authority, for the construction of the glass door that allows the fitness zone to face out onto the stern portions of the mega-yachts.

The large sheet of glass that constitutes the entrance to the gymnasium, placed just a few centimetres above the water, was designed with the collaboration of the Lloyd’s Register right from the start, given that it had to guarantee adequate resistance to the impact of the sea, even in unfavourable weather conditions. Without diminishing the visibility of the internal space, but rather increasing the lighting in the work-out room, this sheet of glass is constructed with two sliding portions, plus two fixed sheets of high-resistance steel, while the glass is an extra-thick, stratified variety tempered thermally.

In addition to the work-out room, there is a sauna and a Turkish bath. Also installed onboard are perfumed showers that provide special thrills: lukewarm water scented with tropical aromas alternates with cold water spiced with wild mint.

The outdoor areas were the first to be designed and structured for wellness, being assigned specific functions.

A perfect example is found on the 60-metre mega-yacht "GiVi", the latest aluminium and steel vessel launched by the CRN. A roomy Jacuzzi tub, outfitted for chromotherapy, allows guests to relax on the forward portion of the sundeck, while the uppermost deck of the CRN’s new 57-metre project (hull no. 122) holds a large pool, 5.5 m in length and 2.2 m in width, that can be used for "treadmill" swimming, thanks to a water spout that generates an adjustable current.

This last vessel, scheduled to be launched in 2008, best exemplifies the magnitude and dimensions of the areas set aside for onboard wellness. The 57-metre vessel with a Turkish bath and aroma-therapy area, a sauna that employs scented essence of fir and a massage room that also holds a beauty salon.

Nothing less than a Beauty Farm on the sea, which, of course, has to include a gym. Installed on the sundeck, where it is totally dedicated to care of the body and exercise, the gym on this vessel was placed inside the main mast, whose volume was expanded accordingly.

The importance of wellness onboard is growing in terms of the space set aside for it as well. At present these zones occupy from 10% to 20% of the total surface area of the vessels, a figure closely tied to the increasing volume of the CRN ships. As the dimensions of the vessels have become increasingly massive, their layouts have been modified as well, with the decks being enlarged to hold the newly designed zones.

In planning wellness areas, CRN works side by side with leading manufactures and service enterprises in the wellness and fitness industries, including Technogym, Starpool and Klafs. Thanks to the skills of all the participants, the different designs can be harmonised and personalised within the same nautical environment, resulting in products that prove unique in terms of their beauty, functional capacity and technological features.

All the wellness areas are designed in a discrete, elegant style. Natural materials such as larch and sandal wood line elegant saunas built according to modern designs: perfect sites for restoring body and soul. Equally refined are the finishing touches in the Turkish bath, where preference has been given to materials such as mosaics made of glass paste or slate, and decorated by master craftsmen on the basis of strictly custom designs.

Gentle lighting, delicate scents of oils and essences and soft music allow guests to indulge in complete relaxation, travelling to unreachable paradises with their minds.

A similar cruise onboard a mega-yacht amounts to nothing less than an experience of total wellness.
